The wedding

Scandinavian weddings are fun, often because there is free alcohol. So, naturally people drink a lot and they often drink too much and then they dance and talk to people they don’t know. In Sweden, especially, speeches are extremely popular. Anyone who wants to make a speech can do so as long as they sign up with the Toastmaster during the evening. It is considered very rude to eat during a speech, which is why 1) dessert is often served at midnight and 2) people die of starvation because someone from the groom’s high-school ice-hockey team decided to give a twenty-seven-minute speech at 10.32 p.m. In Denmark, there are also speeches, but these are done alongside home-composed lyrics of questionable quality, sung by all to the tune of ‘My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean’ or ‘Yellow Submarine’. Danes find these songs cute, fun and traditional. Everybody else nods and has another drink.
